Arrived in Shanghai.

We met at Harsfield-Jackson and flew to Detroit to change planes. In the Detroit airport we saw a cool fountain, and a a red train that runs on an elevated track right through the terminal. All the signs were in English and Japanese. The broadcasts also included Mandarin. A heavy rain fell and we were delayed until 4:50pm. We amused ourselves variously during fifteen hours in the air. I listened to music, read Sawaki Kotaro’s Shinya Tokkyu [Midnight Express], and reviewed Japanese and Mandarin with Anki. I slept a few hours. We saw spectacular mountains over Canada.

Over Canada.

Yang called while we were in the airport, and we agreed to meet up over the weekend. We walked from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 and took the #4 bus to Wujiaochang [Five Points], then a cab to 7 Days Inn.
