June 17, 2011 (Friday)

Twenty-second day in China, first day in Nanjing: 南京大屠杀纪念馆 Nanjing Massacre Museum, 德基广场 Deji Plaza

Ate a crunchy kind of onion bread on the street and spiced-beef noodle soup in a shop by Nanjing Normal University.

Visited the site of the Nanjing Massacre and the museum. Like Auschwitz, not an easy visit. May such things never happen again.

Met Zi, a CouchSurfer and Nanjing local working in media production preparing to go to Michigan, at Deji Plaza and ate Nanjing local food in a huge, packed restaurant upstairs: sweet taro soup, duck xiaolongbao, shaomai, boiled chicken, tofu & seafood soup. Heard live Chinese music, sat at a dark wood table, and recalled the funniest scenes from Pulp Fiction. Subwayed to Xuanwu Lake and walked through the gate and along the shore, admiring the Nanjing nightscape. Parted at the gate. In my room Wei and I talked about 莎士比亚 Shakespeare and 李白 Li Bai.
