Savannah Island Weekend

Savannah, GA

Dear Readers:

This weekend is two days at a friend’s house on Wilmington Island, a few miles east of Savannah, the oldest city in Georgia (est. 1733). We drove about 4.5 hours from Atlanta through Macon and down Interstate 16, which ended in Savannah. A concrete bridge towered over the water between Georgia and South Carolina, behind the brick hall of the Savannah College of Art and Design. We drove under the concrete columns and down Bay Street. Spanish moss dangled thickly overhead. We ate at Moon River Brewery, where I had a crab cake sandwich with Lowcountry rice and a “Belly-washer” Golden Ale brewed in-house.

After dark we walked by tattooed people on the street and drove out into the suburbs of Savannah to Wilmington Island, where we took a narrow drive through dense undergrowth to my friend’s house. Everyone sat on the dock and cooked marshmallows on a propane flame, ate s’mores and drank Pina Coladas. Some of us climbed on the roof of the dock and watched the green lights blink over shallow shoals.
